Battle Against Weeds: Top Tips for Control and Elimination

3040475_l

When you walk or drive through your neighborhood, other lawns seem perfectly manicured and entirely weed free. The healthy ones look like beautiful green carpets without a single imperfection. Beyond the visual appeal, these yards convey the following:

  • Homeowners’ time, effort and pride
  • Desire to create an inviting community
  • Ability to master the “secrets” of effective gardening

Your bad back and schedule don’t allow you to get down on knees to pull out all of the weeds ruling your lawn. However, you still want the same lush results, right? Here are some tips to help you achieve the same look as your neighbors’!

Lawn Experts’ Weed Elimination Advice

When you’re a gardener, weeds can work your last nerve. After you spend time planting colorful flowers, weeds can pop up in the middle of a bed and wrap themselves around the bright blooms. If the weeds become entangled, they can even start to cut off the new flowers.

To help you eliminate weeds, here are some tips from our lawn experts:

  • When re-sodding an area, remove the existing lawn or plants in this section to decrease the growth of weeds and weed grasses in your new lawn.
  • Take the time to pull out all of the weeds at the root level to avoid a reappearance.
  • Installation of a healthy lawn is the most promising way to stop weeds in your new grass.
  • Mowing your new lawn will help sod come together and prevent weeds from popping up through open areas.
  • Avoid using herbicides for 2 months after installing sod and identify the weed first.

Recommendations for Weed Control

If dreaded weeds still turn up, here are recommendations to stop them short in their tracks:

  • Trimec is used on all warm-weather grasses to control of broadleaf-type weeds.
  • Image and Manage is suggested for Nutsedge.

The following are recommended for Crabgrass control:

  • Centipede  – Vantage
  • St. Augustine – Asulox
  • Zoysias – MSMA or Acclaim
  • Bermudas – MSMA

Tips for Selecting the Right Type of Sod for Your Property

Loading sod

In every aspect of our lives, we have an abundance of choices. When you go to a garden supply center, you may stand in front of endless shelves of sod varieties, trying to figure out the right one for your property. You look at the package and attempt to decipher the contents and recommendations, remaining confused about how to proceed.

Expert Guidance to Pick the Best Grass Variety

If your children like to play outside and tumble around on the grass vigorously with your pets, you want to select a variety of sod that will hold up under all the activity. To help you identify the best one for your needs, the experts at Superior Sod & Garden Supplies are committed to sharing our knowledge. Here are some of the pros and cons of different sod varieties.

Traffic-Tolerant and Damage-Resistant Sod

If your primary goal is to identify sod that will handle heavy action, we think that Empire and Zorro Zoysia are the hands-down winners. This dark-green turf grass is:

  • Damage resistant
  • Salt tolerant
  • Shade friendly
  • Winter hardy

In addition, these varieties are not as vulnerable to diseases. As a result, you can enjoy a manicured lawn, if you are careful to mow it each week. For the best results, you’ll need a reel-type mower on the Zorro variety, particularly if you want the appearance of golf-course grass.

Easy-to-Maintain Grass Choice

Are you looking for grass that is low maintenance and won’t look wild if you miss mowing it each week? Do you want to avoid the need for constant fertilization? Would you like to find sod that bounces back if you forget to water it or hit a dry spell?

Then, Centipede (TifBlair Certified) is the ideal sod variety for you! Although this apple-green grass wins the prize for easy maintenance, you still need to be aware of a few drawbacks including:

  • Open to harm from ground pearls and mole crickets
  • Subject to brown areas
  • Vulnerable to heavy activity

Shade-Tolerant Grass

Has the shade around your home made growing grass impossible? You can finally end years of frustration by selecting St. Augustine (Raleigh) sod. The large seed heads will produce wide grass blades, which will add an interesting element in your yard.

You’ll revel in the dark green color of your lawn and the way it holds up under any drought conditions. This salt- and damage-tolerant choice is also a good “plugging” grass, which you’ll need to fertilize fairly regularly and cut faithfully each week. However, be on the look-out for chinch bugs and brown areas, which we can always help you remedy.

Secret of Winning Large-Scale Sod Projects

At Superior Sod & Garden Supplies, we know how to sod big! Although we enjoy teaching homeowners about creating lush grass at their homes, we get an extra thrill working on large-scale projects. What is our secret for landing this work?

Sod-Growing Experience

During 20 years of growing sod in the extreme climate in Kalispell, Montana, owner Don Curtis started building his reputation as the “Father of Sod.” Over time, he learned why using the correct cultivars and providing his own turf plots was essential. As a result of this experience, he developed a special blend of Bluegrasses, which led to the large-scale project of sodding the University of Montana’s new football stadium in Missoula.

Creation and Success of Special Blend of Bluegrasses

Our special blend of Bluegrasses has contributed to the success of large-scale projects for the following reasons:

  • Drought tolerance
  • Long-term wear
  • Winter hardiness

After the university sod installation project was finished, our company handled the daily maintenance for this massive athletic field. We had only 3 weeks to make sure that the field could withstand the intensity of the university’s homecoming game that year. We are particularly proud that every piece of sod remained intact, which was a major success and complete honor for us!

Golf Courses, Baseball Fields, Parks, Tourist Getaways & More

Besides this athletic field project, we were also selected for many other large-scale projects. Some of these have included:

  • Building golf courses from the initial stage
  • Rebuilding and repairing other tees
  • Sodding many large-scale parks
  • Completing many commercial and residential projects

Photos of Big Sod Work

Sometimes, you just need to see photos to grasp what we mean by “big sod work.” We wanted to share our experiences with you in a visual way. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Completing and reconstructing a sand bunker at a golf course
  • Sodding a park located in Missoula, Montana
  • Reconstructing a golf course in Western North Carolina
  • Using our sod extensively at a tourist getaway
  • Supplying and installing sod on 100-acre fields

Grass, Sod and Turf Management Booklet: Tips for Southeastern Region of Coastal North and South Carolina

When you purchased your home, the large yard may have appealed to your family as one of the major attractions. Now that you’ve settled into your house and the realities of weekly maintenance have taken hold, you’re at a loss about proper lawn care. You can take this problem off your worry list because our experts are committed to sharing our knowledge and educating others.

Highlights From Free Booklet About Lawn Care

To help homeowners understand the important factors in lawn care, we have written a complete booklet about grass, sod and turf management.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • If time permits, clear the section completely to avoid weeds popping up again in your new lawn.
  • Use glyphosate, which will not leave any dangerous substances behind, to facilitate this process.
  • When the existing grass and plants are ready for removal, use a spade, turf iron or petrol turf cutter to make this job easier and ensure a level surface for your new lawn.
  • Pick up or rake out stones and debris such as roots to make sure the area is entirely clear.
  • For the best results, use a double-screened (1/4” sieved) sandy loam topsoil for the top few inches.
  • Double dig or rotovate the soil at least two times to a depth of 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) to make sure that the depth and tilth are uniform.
  • Use a garden fork to break up any large clods to create a level area before working in a good  fertilizer.

Sod: Better to Work With Than Seed

Why should someone choose sod for their lawn? With the summer months approaching fast, your front lawn will have 30 degrees less temperature than what you’d find with rock or asphalt. In addition, sod will be 15 degrees lower in temperature than dirt, and during the summer, the lawn will have an effect similar to numerous air conditioners. The grass takes in carbon dioxide, and it releases oxygen back into the environment. With this choice, you have a more environmentally friendly option that lowers the amount of greenhouse gases.

Establishing a Lawn with Sod

One of most reliable methods of creating a front lawn is to use sod. Because our company takes the time to create the sod from seed, it will reach maturity by the time it reaches your home so that you have the perfect lawn. Proper care for your front sodded yard, and you will have a great lawn within 3 weeks. In addition, installing sod on a lawn takes between 3 to 6 hours, and it does not cost much. People should choose our sod company because:

  • Affordable pricing
  • 40 years of experience and expertise
  • Great work ethic and high level of integrity

Why Seeding Makes Less Sense

You might believe that seeding will cost less. That might be true at first, but a lot of costs will continue happening because of erosion. Also, if you have people walking on newly seeded grass, it can mean that it does not grow. You will have to pay for seeding and watering the lawn. Not to mention, it can take between 2 to 3 weeks before you start to see the fruits of your labor. It takes time to nurture and care for these lawns. Why wait a few months before you can use it?

When you use sod, you can walk on it after a couple weeks have passed. Sod also has maximum flexibility in that you can install it as long as the ground has not been frozen. Also, you do not have to use as much water to establish it.

When you have great landscaping on your home, it adds around 20% value to your home. With well-cut grass, it becomes a soft and welcoming surface where children can play. You can also relax on it because of the softness. For further information, call Superior Sod & Garden Supplies now!

Repair a Patchy Lawn With Sod

Spring is here, which means lawns and plants are starting to pick up their growth. This is a time when many homeowners notice parts of their lawn that may not be looking up to par. Many people attempt to reseed these areas, but sod is a fast and affordable alternative that will get your lawn looking green in no time.

Identify What Caused the Damage

Before you sod a damaged area, it is critical to discover what caused the damage in the first place. Failure to fix the underlying problem could result in damage to your sod. Consider how much traffic the area received, if it is in a low spot that collects water or is particularly susceptible to frost damage, or if there are signs of insect or disease damage. A knowledgeable landscaper can help you determine what may have caused your grass to become damaged and offer solutions to prevent it from being a problem in the future.

Installing Sod on Dead Patches

The first step to putting in sod is to remove the old patches of dead grass. Mark out the area, loosen the soil around the dead patch with a spade or shovel and remove the pieces. You will want to dig deep enough to ensure you remove all the roots, and then rake the area flat. Finish the repair by laying your purchased sod pieces. Pieces should be laid tightly but not stretched or overlapped. Walk on the sod or use a lawn roller to ensure the pieces are pressed down and in contact with the soil.

Proper sod installation is critical to good growth. Improperly laid sod may not thrive or will leave bare spots. You should consider hiring a professional sod company to ensure your job is done properly and effectively.

Care for Your Sod

Water your new sod regularly so that the soil beneath the sod stays wet. You may need to water once a day the first week and slowly taper off. Also, restrict foot traffic for the first 2 weeks, and do not mow the area until it is tightly rooted.

Sod can be a quick and affordable way to patch dead areas of your lawn. However, proper installation and maintenance is critical to make sure your grass looks its very best. If your lawn is looking patchy and brown, contact Superior Sod today to see how we can help!
