Repair a Patchy Lawn With Sod

17th March 2016

Spring is here, which means lawns and plants are starting to pick up their growth. This is a time when many homeowners notice parts of their lawn that may not be looking up to par. Many people attempt to reseed these areas, but sod is a fast and affordable alternative that will get your lawn looking green in no time.

Identify What Caused the Damage

Before you sod a damaged area, it is critical to discover what caused the damage in the first place. Failure to fix the underlying problem could result in damage to your sod. Consider how much traffic the area received, if it is in a low spot that collects water or is particularly susceptible to frost damage, or if there are signs of insect or disease damage. A knowledgeable landscaper can help you determine what may have caused your grass to become damaged and offer solutions to prevent it from being a problem in the future.

Installing Sod on Dead Patches

The first step to putting in sod is to remove the old patches of dead grass. Mark out the area, loosen the soil around the dead patch with a spade or shovel and remove the pieces. You will want to dig deep enough to ensure you remove all the roots, and then rake the area flat. Finish the repair by laying your purchased sod pieces. Pieces should be laid tightly but not stretched or overlapped. Walk on the sod or use a lawn roller to ensure the pieces are pressed down and in contact with the soil.

Proper sod installation is critical to good growth. Improperly laid sod may not thrive or will leave bare spots. You should consider hiring a professional sod company to ensure your job is done properly and effectively.

Care for Your Sod

Water your new sod regularly so that the soil beneath the sod stays wet. You may need to water once a day the first week and slowly taper off. Also, restrict foot traffic for the first 2 weeks, and do not mow the area until it is tightly rooted.

Sod can be a quick and affordable way to patch dead areas of your lawn. However, proper installation and maintenance is critical to make sure your grass looks its very best. If your lawn is looking patchy and brown, contact Superior Sod today to see how we can help!
